چکیده

We report on the ultrafast laser inscription (ULI) of volume phase gratings inside gallium lanthanum sulphide (GLS) chalcogenide glass substrates. The effect of laser pulse energy and grating thickness on the dispersive properties of the gratings is investigated, with the aim of improving the performance of the gratings in the mid-infrared. The grating with the optimum performance in the mid-infrared exhibited a 1 order absolute diffraction efficiency of 61% at 1300 nm and 24% at 2640 nm. Based on the work reported here, we conclude that ULI is promising for the fabrication of mid-infrared volume phase gratings, with potential applications including astronomical instrumentation and remote sensing. ©2013 Optical Society of America OCIS codes: (050.1950) Diffraction gratings; (050.7330) Volume gratings; (140.3390) Laser materials processing; (230.1950) Diffraction gratings.

Thermal properties of fiber Bragg gratings inscribed point-by-point by an infrared femtosecond laser

Direct, point-by-point inscription of fiber Bragg gratings by infrared femtosecond laser had been recently reported. Response of these gratings to annealing at temperatures in range 500C to 1050C is studied for the first time. Gratings inscribed by infrared femtosecond lasers were thermally stable at temperatures up to 900C, representing a significant improvement in comparison with the “common”...

Extended phase matching of high harmonics driven by mid-infrared light.

We demonstrate that phase-matched frequency upconversion of ultrafast laser light can be extended to shorter wavelengths by using longer driving laser wavelengths. Experimentally, we show that the phase-matching cutoff for harmonic generation in argon increases from 45 to 100 eV when the driving laser wavelength is increased from 0.8 to 1.3 microm. Phase matching is also obtained at higher pres...

Efficient mid-infrared Cr:ZnSe channel waveguide laser operating at 2486 nm.

We report a Cr:ZnSe channel waveguide laser operating at 2486 nm. A maximum power output of 285 mW is achieved and slope efficiencies as high as 45% are demonstrated. Ultrafast laser inscription is used to fabricate the depressed cladding waveguide in a polycrystalline Cr:ZnSe sample. Waveguide structures are proposed as a compact and robust solution to the thermal lensing problem that has so f...

Ultrafast laser inscription: an enabling technology for astrophotonics.

The application of photonics to astronomy offers major advantages in the area of highly-multiplexed spectroscopy, especially when applied to extremely large telescopes. These include the suppression of the near-infrared night-sky spectrum [J. Bland-Hawthorn et al, Opt. Express 12, 5902 (2004), S. G. Leon-Saval et al, Opt. Lett. 30, 2545 (2005)] and the miniaturisation of spectrographs so that t...
